about

ABOUT THIS TRACK:

Memory is a funny thing.

When the filmmakers of "Roots in My Garden" asked me to write a song from the perspective of a young girl whose mommies are separating, I jumped at the opportunity. The film is based on an actual ‘90s custody battle—back when same-sex parents had less legal protection—so it was rewarding to help tell an important story.

However, the filmmakers didn’t know that I was the age of the young girl in the song when my parents divorced, so I had plenty of firsthand knowledge of how love can curdle into lawsuits. And the reason I didn’t tell them was…I forgot!

I swear to you, I didn’t even catch the parallels until I wrote this post. Memory is a funny thing, and so is coincidence.

lyrics

LYRICS:

I'm the center of their world
I'm the center of their wall
With my 5-year-old drawings
And my 5-year-old scrawl

I learned a new word today
It's called "victory"
And I wrote it on my picture
Of our newly-planted tree

I drew the branches right off the page
'Cause not all branches can be encaged
'Cause not all branches can be encaged

I'm the center of their world
I'm the center of their wall
With my name on angry documents
From Family Law

I learned a new word today
It's called "custody"
Someone gets to choose
And the loser will be me

I drew the branches right off the page
'Cause not all branches can be encaged
'Cause not all branches can be encaged

I learned a new word today
It's called "guarantee"
Never seen it, never felt it
Never felt worthy

I drew the branches right off the page
Now I'm driven right off the stage
'Cause not all branches can be encaged
'Cause not all branches can be encaged

'Cause not all branches can be encaged
'Cause not all branches can be encaged
